Can math be fun? You bet! We’re inviting students to come to UNO July 28 - August 1 to find out just how fun math can be. Our summer algebra program will provide enhancement and reinforcement of mathematics concepts in algebra. Inservice teachers will provide hands-on, cooperative learning opportunities for students. The students will work in small groups to investigate mathematical challenges that are appropriate to the development of algebraic thinking. The program is open to students who will be in

Jefferson Kiddie College is for children ages 5-7. The program is June 9 -19, Monday - Thursday, from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. The fee of $100 covers all supplies. Every child is required to bring a snack each day. Children's literature and hands-on developmentally appropriate learning experiences are combined to excite and intrigue children 5-7 years of age. Each day brings with it a new literature-based unit, which is sure to build curiosity and wonder in the mind of a child. Books are read and discussed and followed by a variety of activities, such as art, cooking, math, science experiments, and dramatic play theater performed in small groups and centers. Children are encouraged to experiment, perform, create, and share knowledge with one another in a risk-free environment.

- Jefferson Kids College is for children ages 8 -13. Kids have the option of attending both the morning and afternoon sessions or just one of the sessions. If you will be attending all day you will need to bring a sack lunch with you.
Jefferson Kids College will be held at our UNO Jefferon Campus beginning June 9 - 19. The morning session of this two-week program will be from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The afternoon session will be from noon - 3:00 p.m. Children who will be staying all day will need to bring a sack lunch. Lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. - Noon.

Math can be a blast! This course will offer hands-on activities as well as brain teasers in a setting that is non-threatening. All of the basics will be covered in a fun, non-competitive way using manipulatives.
Snap Shots
Learn to make your own scrapbook pages to preserve your memories for year after year. You'll discover fun and easy ways to design, organize, and display your photos and memorbilia using stickers, colored paper, die-cuts, decorative scissors, and templates. You will need to provide the memories; we'll take care of the rest. Students should bring some of their favorite snap shots to class to begin making their scrapbook right away.

Mini-College is a program that gives students a “preview” of what it is actually like to learn in a university setting. Courses are conducted in an informal setting so that students receive individual attention from instructors and are encouraged to participate.
Students enroll in two classes of their choice. Select one class from each time period and an alternate in case your first choice is full or canceled. The fee of $135 includes both classes.

Combines experiences in all of the artistic disciplines.
Children will work with the visual arts, the performing arts, and the art of writing.
The art of writing will be explored through the creation of dramatic literature. Participants will perform a play and read their original poems for an audience. Participants will also write, edit and illustrate their own storybook.
Theater and creative movement will teach basic performance techniques, creative movement, rhythm, drumming and storytelling through dance. Students will rehearse and polish their original plays and dances in addition to learning the dances of various cultures.
Visual Arts will include set design, drawing, and painting. Participants will work with a variety of media and techniques
through individual and group projects.
Each participant will work in all creative activities throughout the morning from 9:00 a.m. - noon. At noon, participants who are staying for Mini-College will eat lunch, which will be supervised by teachers. Mini-College ends at 4:00 p.m. If your child is not staying for Mini-College you will need to pick him/her up at the conclusion of Morning Exploration in the Arts at noon.

Now entering its 17th year! This award winning program will cover topics from high tech aeronautics to space flight. The program will offer many exciting and educational hands-on activities. Several field trips are planned so that students may have the chance to see first-hand what they have learned. The program is taught by informative guest speakers from NASA, and the Pontchartrain Astronomy Society, as well as outstanding educators. Students will receive many take-home materials such as commemorative T-shirts, caps, rockets, and educational handouts.
THE PROGRAM
The Space Shuttle
One of the major components of the U.S. Space Shuttle transportation system, the external fuel tank, is built right here in New Orleans. You’ll visit Lockheed
Martin and see how these huge tanks are constructed and assembled. You’ll also learn about the space shuttles’ missions and accomplishments, and how New Orleans plays a vital part in our nation’s space program.
The Solar System
Discover the facts about the solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, black holes,
quasars, and all the planets. Learn about and use the same tools professional
astronomers use when they explore the stars.
Science and History of Space Travel
What goes up must come down! From Kitty Hawk to the moon landing by the
crew of Apollo 11, you’ll uncover the history of flight and space travel. Through
exciting film footage, discussions, and hands-on activities, you will learn how
a plane flies, how air balloons stay in the air, and how a rocket is launched
into space.
Exploring Outer Space
Find out interesting facts about stars, planets, and other astronomical objects
such as meteors and meteorites as speakers give you insight on many of the fascinating aspects of space.
Physics in Space
Physicists will demonstrate to students the A, B and C’s of space with experiments and activities unique to astronomy.
Understanding the Weather
A local Meteorologist will visit Space Quest and discuss the unique weather
patterns that prevail in southern Louisiana. Also learn how satellites are
used in monitoring earth’s weather and how NASA relies on accurate weather
forecasts for its missions.
Solar Experiments
Students will visit the UNO observatory to participate with astronomy instructors in the observation of solar activities.
HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES
Space Quest 2008 includes several hands-on projects and experiments
that encourage students to apply what they have learned. Some of the
projects include:
Each student will construct a model rocket kit and launch it several times to study the concepts of propulsion and trajectory. A guest that is active with constructing and launching high-powered rockets that go beyond any heights you can imagine will visit Space Quest and talk about the variety of high powered rockets that exist.
Gliders
Each Space-Quester will build and fly a glider kit to demonstrate the laws
of aerodynamics.
Egg Drop
Space-Questers will compete in an egg-drop competition to gain an
understanding of the laws of gravity.
FIELD TRIPS
Space Quest 2008 will take several field trips so students can observe what they’ve learned and ask questions of practicing space scientists.
Lockheed Martin
Located in New Orleans East, Lockheed Martin is the NASA contractor that
designs, develops, and assembles the external fuel tank for the space shuttle
program. We will tour the facility and see just what it takes to get the shuttle
into space.
St. Charles Parish Library Planetarium
A new digital theater will give students a look at the world around us.
Stennis Space Center
Located in Mississippi, the Stennis Space Flight Center is where rocket booster
engines are tested. We will have the opportunity to tour the site and visit the
NASA Museum at Stennis.
Enrollment is limited. The course fee includes all activities, lectures, handouts,
accessories, and transportation to and from all field trips. In addition, all
participants will receive a UNO Space Quest T-shirt, a UNO Space Quest cap,
a glider kit, a model airplane kit, and a model rocket kit. All students will need
to provide a shoebox and newspapers to store all projects. Please bring a sack lunch daily.

Have you ever dreamed of being on the big screen and starring in the motion pictures, or would you like to act in the school play. Then you will not want to miss out on this new and exciting course. Steal the Scene is for both beginning and advanced actors. In this program you will work on pantomime, improvisation, auditioning, and storytelling. The program will conclude with a short performance utilizing the skills you have learned. Enrollment is limited so don’t hesitate sign up know.
Pantomime
The focus here is on expressive movement and object manipulation in scene work. Students will learn to use pantomime through space and object work.
Improvisation
The students will learn the art of improvisation- acting on their feet. By the end of the week, they will become more comfortable with thinking on their feet!
Auditioning
Students will learn how to prepare for an audition by learning about choosing the right monologue and cold reading skills.
Storytelling
Students will learn how to captivate an audience and enthrall them with a story or a joke. As a group and individual the students will learn story structure and create their own short play.
Characterization
Students will learn acting exercises to help them create a variety of detailed characters using body and voice. They will be introduced to acting techniques that actors use to help them create believable characters.
Short Play Performance
The class will culminate in a short performance created by the student actors
through improvisation and storytelling skills they have honed over the week.
Actors and actresses may need to bring some old clothes from home for costumes.
Each actor and actress will need to bring a lunch each day, there are no vending machines. Do not miss out on this great program.
