Golden Ager Program

This program is designed to encourage persons over 65 years of age and older to enroll in credit classes at UNO. It has been made possible by state legislation which exempts persons age 65 and over from payment of tuition and some fees at all public colleges and universities in the state. The cost of text books and special fees are not included in the fee exemption.

The same academic regulations which apply to the student body in general apply to Golden Agers. These include class attendance, testing, course prerequisites, and admission requirements.

Request for Information

Golden Ager students may contact Natalie Seither by phone at 504-849-8000 or email to request a packet of information sent to them about the Golden Ager program.

Courses Eligible for Golden Ager Students

Golden Ager students can take UNO credit courses at any of the UNO locations: Mandeville Junior High, Slidell High, John Ehret High, Jefferson Campus, Downtown Campus, and the Lakefront Campus.

Students can take classes pursuing an undergraduate degree, master’s degree, or doctorate degree.

Note: The same academic regulations which apply to the student body in general apply to Golden Agers. These include class attendance, testing, course prerequisites, and admission requirements.

Golden Ager students can also be non-degree seeking students. Students can choose to take classes for a grade or for audit. Students who choose to take a class for audit must have a yellow audit form filled out by the Chair of the Department offering the course and by the Instructor teaching the course (the only college that requires the instructor to sign the form is Liberal Arts).

Golden Ager students do not receive any tuition discount on non-credit courses.

Taking Classes for Audit

Regularly enrolled students at UNO may be admitted to classes as auditors by obtaining written permission from the Chair of the Department offering the course and by the Instructor teaching the course (the only college that requires the instructor to sign the form is Liberal Arts), and by the dean of the college in which they are enrolled. The fees for auditing a course are the same as for enrolling for credit. Auditing fees are non-refundable.

Auditors will not receive university credit, and will not be permitted to take an advanced standing examination on audited work.

Students may not change from audit to credit after the last day to add a course. With permission of their dean, they may change from credit to audit within the first 15 class days of the semester (7 class days in summer).

How to Apply

Students must apply for admission to UNO. Students must determine if they need to fill out the undergraduate application or graduate application.

Fill out the undergraduate part of the application if you are a first time freshman, a transfer student, a returning UNO student, pursuing a second bachelor’s degree, or a guest student (one semester only). Please click here for a PDF version of the UNO undergraduate/graduate application.

Note: The PDF format requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download the reader here.

Fill out the graduate part of the application if you are seeking a graduate degree, are seeking teacher certification, hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to enroll as a non-degree seeking student, or are a guest (one semester only) from another graduate school. Please click here for a PDF version of the graduate/undergraduate application.

Note: There are no application fees assessed to Golden Agers so please do not submit the requested application fee on the application. Write at the top of the application the words “Golden Ager.”

Students should send a copy of their driver’s license or a copy of their state issued ID for non-drivers with their application to UNO.

The completed undergraduate application should be mailed to:

Appointments can be made to accommodate busy schedules and she can meet you at the Lakefront Campus (Education Building Room 122) or the Jefferson Campus in Metairie.

Registering for classes

Degree seeking students should register for classes at their designated college office (either Business Administration, Education, Engineering, General Studies, Liberal Arts, Sciences, or Urban Studies). If you selected the special student category as an undergraduate or are a non-degree seeking graduate student, then you should register for classes with Metropolitan College located in the Education Building Room 122. Please click here for the PDF version of our registration form.

To pick appropriate courses, please see UNO’s Course Catalog. Click here to view the catalog.

To determine dates and times of courses for each semester please see the Class Schedule Bulletin. Click here to view the bulletin.

If you are not interested in receiving credit for a course, then you have the option to decline a grade and take the class as an audit. A form must be filled out by the Chair of the Department offering the course and by the Instructor teaching the course (the only college that requires the instructor to sign the form is Liberal Arts).

If you need advising to determine the correct course, contact the advisor for Golden Agers, Natalie Seither, at 504-849-8002 or email her.
